on your heart

[chloe, 5 & anika, 4]

i took these sweet girls out tonight. we got school supplies and stopped for chips & salsa in a restaurant while we chatted. truth be known, most of the time i'd rather talk with kids than adults. they're honest and unskewed. i love that.

when we were talking about the upcoming wedding of my brother, they continued to work through the idea of different kinds of love. chloe says, "so, aunt kayla can love other people, but only a special kind of love for uncle nate?" we talked through this and i took the opportunity to remind them how very careful they have to be with their heart; how sad it can be to give away that special love to someone who isn't meant to be your husband.

they asked how you know who God chooses as your husband. we chatted more and the lady in the booth behind us turned to check out the girls. i'm sure she thought i was crazy for talking to a 4 and 5 year old about all of this, but why should i wait?

while i'm sure, at some point, i won't be their very first choice to ask about their love questions, i hope i'll always be a top choice. i pray they'll have other adults that will speak truth into their life, too. truth that, at some point, you just can't hear from your parents. i know i can't protect them from every heartache, but that doesn't mean that i can't arm them with knowledge, confidence and the ability to stand firm in the truth that they have heard.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23

  1. your girls are adorable. watching them grow in independence and knowing that one day they'll be on their own and we won't be there to protect them is not easy... but i think you're doing the right thing - enjoying the time you have with them now.

  3. So true...John and i always feel like if they are old enough to ask the question than if we don't answer it somebody else will! And while they are coming to us w/ their questions we want to be the ones to answer them and to help to build their Godly armor against the ways of the world.
What a blessing to have such a sweet talk with your girls and an evening out with them too!

  4. totally agree! we talk to our kids often about how God has a special person picked out for them :) it's better for them to hear it from us than hear it wrong on the playground!

  6. They are so blessed to have a loving mom who is so plugged into making sure that they know they can always come to her and ask her anything ... and because you speak in truth, there is no reason to believe that that will ever change. Lovely! Destiny D.
