stitch.

my mom came to visit for a couple days.  we celebrated grandparent's day
with sweet, little activities and suddenly decided that no more time should pass
before she taught us how to crochet.  off to the store we went.  i hoped that i'd
actually be able to pick it up quickly because shopping for yarn was pretty and fun!

mom has been crocheting since she was a little girl and our girls were excited
to learn.  suddenly, i looked up and there were my 6 girls and my mom.
i love life.  chloe & anika are quickly perfecting their chain stitch.

i couldn't wait to sit for my turn after everyone was all tucked into
bed.  after an hour of learning some stitches and how to begin to read
patterns, i had this cute flower.  i think i have a new love.

so, where are my crochet friends?
any favorite websites/blogs/books?
do you have a favorite yarn supplier on-line?
tell me all the things.

  1. I love crocheting...I prefer to touch the yarn in a store, I am a little weird...but now that I am quite familiar with some brands I will then order online. I cannot always justify the cost of yarn from a a specialty shop but do use for special projects.

    Have fun!

  3. Rookie crochet friend here. Actually the last blanket I made was when we were sitting next to each other. I love youtube. It tells me how and then I hit replay over and over!

  4. How fun! I bet your little girls were thrilled to learn. I'm not much into crochet, but I am always knitting. I love love WEBS (yarn.com) and happyknits.com for yarn. Purlbee is also just utterly gorgeous eye candy.

  5. I've made a bunch of things lately, a cute elf hat for Blaise, a mug cozy, a baby blanket {which was a bit of a fail as it was my first project in a while} and I have an almost finished Red Angry Bird. :) I basically just google what I want to make and then find recipes. Or Pinterest!
    Oh and washcloths.
I made this infinity scarf with this gorgeous llama wool and it is absolutely lovely. http://peoplewebs.blogspot.com/2011/01/pattern-chunky-circle-scarf.html

    I have a Pinterest crochet board: http://pinterest.com/vanster/crochet/

And this article on keeping your edges straight while using a double crochet stitch is BRILLIANT. It's a must read. http://www.crochetme.com/blogs/kim_werker/archive/2009/4/13/demystifying-double-crochet-for-beginners.aspx

    Enjoy!

  6. I love reading your blog. Whenever I see a new one up, Im like "Yay! Husband, come see this blog! They have a giant family and love God" and he's like "thats nice honey". Im always more enthusiastic than him. Anyways, I really appreciate you sharing about (sometimes) fun and (sometimes) personal stuff. Thanks.

  7. 1. Join Ravelry.com. The quintessential site for all knitters & crocheters, you'll chat, find patterns, see others projects, buy/sell yarn. 2. Visit Sheep's Clothing in downtown Valpo. Paula & Kate are very helpful. Great quality yarn. Can't wait to see your work!

  9. Sorry. I know nothing about crocheting :( I actually have an unrelated question.... I've heard you mention your husband's business in reference to your home. We are beginning the building process of our first home, and I would love to have some more information on your house. I LOVE your style! Would you be willing to share a little more about your business or your sources for materials? Any information would be helpful. Thank you so much!

  12. I love to crochet! I make all kinds of stuff. I have the Crochet Stitch Bible, which is great because I can pick any stitch and make anything I want from it. Etsy has lots of adorable crochet patterns. I even have an Etsy shop where I sell some patterns for children's items.

  13. I'm so hopelessly in love with knitting that I have gone even further over the edge. I have learned how to spin on a drop spindle, and have been buying unwashed fleeces so that I can wash, comb, spin and then knit some fun things. I am loving this fiber play. I am thinking sheep next...LOL.
    Ravelry is great too.

  14. I am just learning too, it's the best thing I could have done for myself in the last little while. It takes my focus off things that I just don't need to worry about, love it!

I use YouTube a LOT for learning. I have a couple books, but I am such a visual learner, I need to see someone do it to fully get it.

  16. I'm a brand new knitter/crocheter and Ravelry.com is amazing, as is YouTube. Purlbee and VeryPink.com are good, too. I love going into the yarn shops and looking at and feeling all of the yarns. So. Much. Fun. And so wonderful that you and all of your beautiful girls learned this from your Mom. xx

  17. I love crocheting! I learned in junior high from a lady that creates her own patterns and tested out patterns for magazines. I don't make as much time for it but I love seeing a project come together and being able to share it with others. Enjoy making and exploring!
