selections.

have i told you that we're building a home?
that's actually what matt does for a living--
builds custom homes--and we have to keep our
home current for our business.

so, we're in the thick of the selection process, which i happen to really enjoy.
i've had my phone with me often, but hoping to start getting better pictures
and actually bring you along on our process.  fun, right?

so far, we have house plans--with a big enough dining room to fit
our soon-to-be family of 9....plus friends even!  [the next challenge
in that will be the table, but i'll find one!]  i've loved using pinterest
as an idea board.  we're coming really close to being done with kitchen
and bathroom selections.  below you can see how helpful the twinsies
are with these selection meetings!  [they make me smile.]

the top left picture is the wood flooring we picked.  i love it.  it's hand scraped
and the color variation is beautiful.  the white cabinets with chocolate
brown glazing in the bottom left picture will be the perimeter cabinets.
the center furniture piece island will be painted one of those colors in the picture!
i think i have my choice on color....what would you choose?
the counter tops will be quartz.  i prefer its clean, monotone look.

listen, it's hard for me to talk about these things
because i've seen how a LOT of other people in the world live.
i know that we don't need any of these things.
here's the thing though.  this is where God has us right now.
this is something my husband is very good at and
it provides....for us & more for the Kingdom.

so, i hope you'll embrace this process with me & maybe even
help me some with the process along the way!

  1. I love it. Love love love that you are sharing with us, and that you are willing to explain (not that you need to, but I do the same.)

I am so thankful for the work Jeff does, and the work that I do, and the extra perks that are really just part of the job. So blessed. And also, fun. :)

  2. that is awesome! Don't defend yourself...you do what God has called you to do. Think of it this way--your children, whom you have/will adopt from Africa are getting ready to see just how big God's blessings can be!!!

And as for that table--my parents needed one for all 20 of us to squeeze around and they had theirs made in Lancaster, PA--by an Amish man. It is a beautiful table and if you want, I can ask my parents for the name/#.

    Love you girl!

  7. I hope you have a great time designing your new house. It is a blessing to be able to have a home for nine people. I am sure those two blessings, a big home and a big family, are connected. I can't wait to see how things come along! I am a new reader and I love your blog design. It is lovely.

  8. Bless you for your honesty about the difficulties. And for being willing to thank God for where He has you!

Okay. So, the lower right picture has 2 samples of the counter about the paint sample colors, right?
I don't know how good of a pick this is, but, I will go with the brown counter on the left & a gray blue paint on the right.

My parents bought their table from an Amish carpenter, too. (Maybe the same one Paige mentions?) All 22 members of the family can sit at it for Sunday dinner every week.

Hey - i'm about to friend request you on fb friends of mandie and rachel in uganda and total stalker of your blog... didnt realize we are in the exact boat and have many of the same selections~ my husband is a builder, we are building our house, have white cabinets, hand scrapped tobacco road floors, blues and browns, and little ones who make those home depot/lowes runs for the millionth time to look at fans etc. also all about the big table... we found a farm table that has 4 seats and a huge bench that holds 4 adults quite easily and we can easily fit our old 4 wooden chairs at it too! we are currently a family of 4, im due in july, and praying towards adopting soon with the possibility of NOW! looking forward to watching your house go up and family grow!

  15. I have loved the process of building a new home... we have been able to do that each time we have moved. My 2 favorites are lighting and hardware for the cabinets. :)

Color choices for the island? If it's the dots I'm picking from I love the green.

    Happy selecting!!

  17. Thank you for sharing this with us. I love the selections!

By the way, is it totally lame that I don't know how to leave my email address when I comment? I'm going to try to log into my WP account. Let's see if it works.

Ok, that didn't work since I self host. Can I blame blogger? Or am I that technologically challenged?

  23. I have the perfect table for you. My husband built it from two ikea butcherblock countertops and fancy fence posts turned upside down. I collected the chairs from thrift stores and yard sales. Each a different shape and color. I LOVE my table. Makes me think of my family and how we are all unique and different and beautiful.
I posted a picture of it here ...

  24. I'm really excited for this! :) I can understand (in a small way, probably) the inner struggle with seeing poverty and then living the way we Americans live. But there's something about knowing that right where you are is right where God wants you to be. And He's doing something great w/ you guys - the space you'll have for your growing family (both immediate and of the heart) is amazing. Praising Him w/ you for the ability to do a project like this and praying for His grace over it all.

  28. Cool. I can't wait to hear more about this project.

    1. How many sqft will your house be?
    2. What is the layout?
    3. Is the house part of a development?
    4. Did you buy the property recently?
    5. How much land will you build it on?
    6. Are you building in the city or the suburbs?

Our dream is to custom-build a house someday so I'm curious... :)
