merriment

every year after thanksgiving, we officially let the christmas music play throughout of house. as the mad shoppers hunt down the bargains on friday, we prepare the house for the change of seasons. packed away is all my burnt orange & olive green....all the leaves & gourds....the pumpkins & mums. the girls are fascinated by it all. they love to help pack away, clean & move around the furniture.

so, we were ready for our saturday after thanksgiving tradition of going to cut down our christmas trees. that's right, i meant to say trees. we bundled everyone up for the 32 degree weather and headed out. despite the cold, it was fun....the girls ran out and picked a tree, then we promptly went inside for hot sassafrass tea as dad dutifully cut them down.

we all did the downstairs tree decorating together. you know the one with all the precious hand-made with love from your kiddos ornaments, wizard of oz ornaments, and the one lovingly crafted from your MIL of your hubby's pic from kindergarten? i love taking out each ornament from the box & remembering it. i love even more that the girls are starting to remember them.

and i'm off to finish the other tree now. maybe i'll update with pics if it gets done and cleaned up before bedtime.

and may i just say that putting up a live christmas tree with your husband & still liking each other should call for some kind of award. why do the trees never want to stand up straight? we've made it our mission to fix that for next year.

just for the record, if you've almost given up & brilliantly think that maybe if you stuff the hole in the tree trunk with play-doh, then when you put it back on the stand the play-doh will fill the gaps & tree will stand up straight...it won't work. trust me.

  1. oh goodness, i'm so relieved to hear i'm not the only one who harbors malicious feelings against christmas trees. ;) how awesome that you cut your own down! you totally deserve a mom of the year award (plus that patient-wife award). consider yourself decorated.

  3. An all-day outing to a tree farm to cut down a Christmas tree is one of my favorite traditions as a child. Rob never did that, as they always had fake ones, but was delighted to continue my childhood tradition when we got married. The first year of marriage, we actually cut a tree from our own backyard in upstate NY! This year was a lot of fun too, and I'm glad our tree is up and decorated!

  6. I found you via your comment on 60 piggies. I have enjoyed reading a few of your posts. That is a great family shot and your right, any marriage that can survive putting up a real tree will last forever. ;)
